R46 101
The short story
The R46 is a stainless-steel subway car built by Pullman-Standard for New York City's B Division (the lettered lines) and delivered from 1975 to 1978. At 75 feet, each car is longer than the older 60-foot cars it joined.
The fleet had a rough start. Cracks were found in the trucks (the wheel assemblies under each car) soon after delivery, which led to repairs and a long fight with the builder. In the early 1990s the whole fleet went through a general overhaul that rebuilt the cars inside and out. Today they run in linked sets of four cars.
Over five decades R46s have run on many lettered lines. Their last home is Coney Island Yard, serving the N, Q and W. The new R211 fleet is replacing them, and retired sets are stored at the yards until they're sent for scrapping.
